Nick Chávez

English: Nick is a second-year MA candidate in Hispanic linguistics, and a TA in the Spanish as a Heritage Language program within UNM’s Spanish & Portuguese Department.  His academic interests include heritage language pedagogy, cognitive linguistics, and the sociolinguistic relationship between heritage languages and the dominant language in an educational context.

He became involved with the union and decided to run for his department steward position after attending several union protests during the Spring 2023 compensation reopener, attending union meetings, and volunteering for the cause over the summer and fall. He is currently running for election to be steward during the 2024-2025 academic year.

Outside of academic life, he enjoys combat sports like boxing and MMA. He is also passionate about physical fitness, specifically lifting weights, calisthenics, and yoga. Recently, he competed in a powerlifting competition where he accomplished a new squat PR of 112.5 kg.

Español: Nicholás es candidato de la maestría en la lingüística hispana en su segundo año y TA en el programa de Spanish as a Heritage Language del departamento de español y portugués. Sus intereses académicos incluyen la pedagogía de lenguas de herencia, la lingüística cognitiva y la relación sociolingüística entre lenguas de herencia y la lengua dominante en el contexto educativo.

Se encargó de las responsabilidades del delegado sindical del SpanPort después de asistir unas manifestaciones durante la reapertura de compensación del Spring 204.

En su vida personal, le gustan los deportes de combativos el box y MMA, y tiene una pasión por el ejercicio. Le gusta hacer todo tipo de ejercicios para mejorar su condición física. Últimamente, hizo una competencia de Powerlifting, en que cargó un récord personal en la sentadilla de 112.5 kg.
